Comment: what RedCLARA and LA NRENs have learnt so far

...

Facebook has been a useful tool for the two contests that were implemented in the past. Having thousands of users, it proved an effective tool for providing them with up to date information, and contributed significantly not only in raising awareness on the contests, but also for coordinating the projects in a more efficient way.

RedCLARA

  • The RSS of the RedCLARA news are connected both to Facebook and Twitter, so we enhance the visibility of our information without loosing a single minute.
  • A must: Always answer as soon as possible the requests of your friends or visitors in TW and FB
  • Be friendly and polite: always thank your visitors and friends for their posts, doubts and comments, and if a response is requested, give it right away. It is better to say “we will come back soon with a proper answer for you” than not answering at all.
  • If you are looking after some opinions about some particular issue, just ask by FB and/or TW, people in social media love to say what they think about the issues that they care of.
  • Use TW and FB to create a momentum for your events: Did you know that...?, Have you already registered yourself at...?, etc, are appealing questions for the social media audience: people feels that you care for their opinion and appreciate their feedback.
  • If you like, they will like; if you follow them, they will follow you.
  • If you have nothing to say, then don't say it! Never loose a chance to be quiet! In social media there are too much words running daily, and if you use TW and/or FB for “blah” comments, you will be just another “blah” in the “blah ocean”.
  • Remember, the scientists and academics (as any person) have ego, and they love to see their names everywhere: The experience of RENATA (Colombia) in the use of FB and TW has been extremely positive, and what they do is to strongly disseminate all the videoconferences that are running through their member institutions and over their network. They focus on the people that will be part of those events, and hence, those people tell their friends and colleagues that RENATA is talking about them, their ego grows as the friends of RENATA in Facebook and it's followers in Twitter.

REDIRIS

As we don´t have a RSS service in the webpage of RedIRIS, I think social media is very good for people to know about our news in the moment we publish the information. Twitter perhaps it´s better for that than Facebook.

I´m very happy with both services because our followers give us very good feedback about them (Some people of our affiliated institutions have told me they are very useful for them), but, in this 2 months the active participation of the followers and fans, writing comments/posts/retweets in our pages is not good enough.
