About the GREN Global Map Working Group

The GREN Global Map working group of volunteers from the R&E Networking community, working on data formats and applications facilitating collaborative, interactive network maps.

The initial criteria for the success of the delivered visualisation product are:

  1. A dynamic/interactive map (zoomable with selectable layers and sections), which also supports printed versions;
  2. The ability to show intra- and inter-NREN nodes and connections, including some meta information (e.g. link speed);
  3. The ability to show connected institutions and major science infrastructure and instruments;
  4. A model where data is maintained by individual (N)REN operators and collected automatically, in a common format, in order to reduce update overhead and keep the map continuously up to date; and
  5. Achieving a critical mass of participation.

Group Chairs

  • Tom Fryer; GÉANT
  • Ryan Davies, CANARIE

Current Status

Development under way, led by CANARIE, with assistance from RNP.

GRENML Python input/output library released, installable via PIP.

Alpha versions of standalone distributed database nodes and map visualisation display have been demoed worldwide.

GREN Map Team and Roles

Previous

Project and implementation requirements (stories, prioritization) gathered and approved.

Prototype GRENML Python support library drafted, not yet released publicly.

Prototype map visualisation, based on the GÉANT Map, prepared and presented at TNC19 to general interest.

Distributed database implementation plan proposed and approved.

Request for participation published and distributed.

Existing Maps

This is not an exhaustive list.  It is recognised that most networks have a static or dynamic map.  We have identified the following examples as a cross-section in order to gather initial requirements for our efforts:
