Task 3: Implementation

The Implementation task manages and implements the physical network infrastructure. The task manages the infrastructure to understand the demands on individual elements and to determine the optimum solution for adding, removing, or changing network infrastructure to ensure infrastructure is economically and effectively utilised. Specifically this will include the management of site providers, power configuration, racks, rack layouts, structured cabling, cross connects, equipment interface and port availability, spares and consumables. This will also include ensuring physical network infrastructure meets service performance parameters and resiliency requirements of users. The Implementation task owns service delivery for SA1 continually driving lead-time and cost improvements for the delivery of connectivity services. Leading engagement with vendors and suppliers in this area. The Implementation task will own the delivery for all network infrastructure and will be responsible for approval of all Operational contract content with suppliers and vendors for infrastructure, will work with SA6 to ensure supplier and vendor performance is satisfactory and take the necessary action when not.

Objectives

  • Implement new service requests within stated lead-times
  • Ensure the network is never short of physical infrastructure capacity and or establish arrangements for rapid capacity provision.
  • Implement the networking requirements of other activities and stakeholders.
  • Continually search for ways to acquire hardware and consumables under improved commercial terms.
  • Deliver work plan without spending entire budget.
  • Investigate ways to reduce GÉANT network cost.

1

Regional connectivity studies.

Delivery of network changes from the recommendations out of regional studies as approved by the Exec to determine the most cost effective and technically suitable network infrastructure to serve the users in a particular region.

2

Infrastructure change & service requests

Continue to deliver network infrastructure and configuration change requests to required deadlines working with users and other project activates to ensure changes are made effectively and with minimal disruption to production services. Implement all new network connectivity service requests according to lead-times and SLAs within service descriptions. Implement essential infrastructure and configuration changes to ensure the performance of the network and supported services are never compromised.

3

Dark fibre network

Recover optical equipment from ceased fibre routes and redeploy to provide fibre connectivity to areas where the Exec have approved the expansion of the dark fibre network. Any surplus equipment will be installed in the Cambridge lab and be used as part of the GÉANT Technology and Operational verification capability.

4

Technology and Operational verification capability.

If approved, implement the design and operationalise the necessary processes and procedures for the proposed GÉANT Technology and Operational verification capability.

5

Inventory

If ready for deployment, implement the new inventory management system. Build new data tables, cleanse existing data, develop reconciliation to NMS, integrate into existing system suite, implement workflow, migrate data, train staff, decommission old system.
