Goals

  • get synced and issues resolved to keep us on track

Discussion items

  • Quick update on EBSI EA Wave 3:
    • Hooray: GÉANT registered on EBSI as trust-anchor for the "educational ID" VC
    • Discussions ongoing between EBSI cluster lead, CG and  GÉANT to maximise the benefit for us
  • Risk assessment update:
    • separate call for the strategic risks carried out 23 April
    • to be continued 24 April at 3pm
  • Infoshare planning:
    • Infoshare on 28 May is the first in an envisaged series on approx. quarterly basis
    • Key message in the first infoshare:
      • the "why", based on https://wiki.geant.org/x/SYMKL (paper as input document available 1 week ahead of meeting)
      • what's new, opportunities and risks
      • the need for a community positioning, and what this will include on a high flight level:
        • for GEANT (org, project, international)
        • for NRENs (national)
      • introduce some leading example activities (not widely known yet) and in line with the "why" message above:
        • OIDC Federation
        • DC4EU activities
        • → this will spice up things and show the way - a more practical element of what we will have to do in the future
      • this leads to a presentation structure like this:
        • 30' intro into the where we come from, what changed, opportunities risks - basically the "why"
        • 30' "lighthouse" activities we are in (while making explicit why we think those are "lighthouse" activities in the light of the "why")
        • 30' discussion
    • Outlook:
      • upcoming infoshare to cover the topics we are aware of being worked upon (and potentially identify missing bits?)
      • questionnaire for collecting national activities and NREN engagements
      • positioning input to CTO workshops

Upcoming events:

  • T7 Infoshare, 28 May morning 1h30, VC
  • TNC24, 10-14 June 2024, Rennes FR
  • DICE Europe, 18-20 June 2024, Zürich CH

Action 1: Key message of a potential communications regarding the recent EBSI registration of GÉANT:

Where do we come from?

  • GÉANT is running the trust and identity backbone of the international research and education sector for two decades
  • Many Erasmus services rely on this trust and identity backbone for years… (numbers?)

What are we up to?

  • the promises of the wallet ecosystem… decentralised, more privacy preserving, sector-overarching, integrated with the eID

What did we achieve

  • The “educational ID” VC was designed to match as much as possible today’s user information transferred by the trust and identity backbone between organisations of the research and education sector and services consumed by members.
  • GÉANT is now registered on the EBSI blockchain as trust anchor for the “educational ID” VC. This mirrors the role of GÉANT in the existing infrastructure and brings it into the wallet ecosystem of EBSI.

What are the benefits:

  • universities profit from a simplified migration path towards the wallet ecosystem, as the the user information as well as the trust fabric between the universities remain identical.
  • no new governance structures need be established in EBSI to govern the “ecucational ID” VC, as the existing sectoral governance structure of GEANT can be re-used instead. It might even serve as an example for other sectoral governance migration opportunities.

Backlog

  • Review existing services to identify opportunities and challenges to adopt the distributed technologies paradigm. Grab existing results as a start
  • Gather previous work done by the NRENs/universities on using SSI technologies, as well as other sectors. Crowd-source among ourselves
