In today's rapidly evolving world, the landscape for National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) is more dynamic and complex than ever. From ground-breaking EU initiatives to significant geopolitical shifts, NRENs face a constant stream of challenges and opportunities that demand a unified, informed response.
Why SIG-Public Affairs and Policy? Because Your Voice Matters.
The idea for SIG-Public Affairs and Policy (PA) emerged from a vital discussion at a GEANT General Assembly, where delegates engaged in passionate, yet ultimately unconcluded, breakout sessions on the future GEANT Strategy. Topics like Digital Sovereignty and the evolving role of NRENs – from pure network providers to comprehensive service facilitators for Research and Education – sparked intense debate. It became clear: a critical need exists for a dedicated platform where these vital discussions can continue, where insights can be shared, and where collective action can be forged.
SIG-Public Affairs and Policy (PA) is designed to be your umbrella forum for strategic discussions on the most pressing issues impacting NRENs. Imagine a place where you can:
- Navigate Geopolitical Currents: Discuss the far-reaching consequences of global events, from international conflicts to the actions of major world powers, and their direct impact on NREN operations and strategy.
- Decipher EU Initiatives: Gain clarity and contribute to discussions on pivotal new EU policies, such as the AI Continent Action Plan, ensuring the NREN perspective is heard and considered.
- Champion Digital Sovereignty: Collaborate on how NRENs can effectively navigate and contribute to national and European digital independence.
- Enhance Public Affairs Expertise: Exchange knowledge and best practices on engaging with national governments and EU officials. Learn how to strategically position your NREN, craft impactful position papers, and make your voice heard in key decision-making forums. While not a training ground, this is a hub for rich, peer-to-peer learning and discussion among NRENs, whether you're highly experienced or seeking specific support.
- Form a Collective Voice: This SIG offers a unique opportunity to develop joint opinions and leverage the collective strength of NRENs to influence policy, ensuring our crucial role in the research and education ecosystem is recognized and supported, including participation in expert groups in Brussels.
Who Should Join?
If you are an NREN professional, policy expert, public affairs specialist, or simply someone passionate about the strategic direction and resilience of NRENs in a changing world, SIG-Policy is for you. This is a platform for knowledge exchange, collaborative problem-solving, and shaping the future.
Don't let critical discussions end without conclusion. Join the SIG PA and contribute to a stronger, more unified voice for NRENs globally.
Great news: The Special Interest Group on Public Affairs and Policy (SIG-PA) is officially moving forward! We are now a formally approved GÉANT SIG, building on the success of our TNC25 introduction. We have extended invitations to our initial cohort of Steering Committee (SC) members and are finalizing the committee's formation. The SC's first strategic meeting will take place in January, serving as the final session of our upcoming Public Affairs Workshop.
