Facilitating Inclusive Digital Student Mobility

Introduction

In an era where digital transformation is pivotal, the European Commission has embarked on an ambitious journey to digitize the Erasmus+ programme. This initiative, part of the broader European Student Card Initiative, aims to streamline the student application process for Erasmus+ mobility. It leverages the integration of national eIDs via eIDAS alongside student IDs through Academic Identity Federations and eduGAIN, aiming to create a seamless, fully digital workflow.

The Challenge of Digital Inclusion

Despite the progress, a significant challenge remains: not all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) participating in Erasmus+ have the capability to connect to their national identity federation. This gap poses a risk of digital exclusion for students from these institutions, potentially hindering their access to Erasmus+ mobility opportunities.

The Solution: IdP of Last Resort

To address this challenge, the 'IdP of Last Resort' has been developed as a strategic solution to ensure no institution is left behind in the digital transformation of student mobility. This initiative allows HEIs without the necessary IT infrastructure or those from countries with federations not connected to eduGAIN, to still participate fully in the Erasmus+ programme.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Simplification of the Enrolment Process: The 'IdP of Last Resort' simplifies the online enrolment process for students, enabling them to engage with Erasmus+ mobility programmes effortlessly.
  • Affiliation and Identity Management: It facilitates the management of student affiliations and European Student Identifiers, ensuring students are recognized and can access services across the Erasmus+ network.
  • Broad Accessibility: By providing a fallback solution for identity management, the initiative ensures that all HEIs, regardless of their size or IT capability, can partake in the digital offerings of the Erasmus+ mobility programme.

Operational Excellence

The implementation of the 'IdP of Last Resort' on top of MyAcademicID and the GEANT Core AAI Platform, leverages advanced technology and insights into the HEI ecosystem, ensuring a reliable and efficient service that supports the diverse needs of HEIs and their students. This solution embodies the commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that digital transformation in education benefits all stakeholders.

Looking Forward

The ongoing success of the 'IdP of Last Resort' is a testament to the collective effort to achieve seamless student mobility and connected student e-services. As we move forward, continuous improvement and expansion of digital services will remain central to our mission, ensuring that the Erasmus+ programme remains accessible, inclusive, and beneficial for all European students.
