Abstract (submitted to TNC2024 11 March 2024)

Our community developed T&I services to support processes in the R&E sector and - since research and education are borderless - scaled them globally. We started on unchartered territory and did initially - well over a decade or two - not get much attention from other sectors. Let's call this our "Garden V1.0". But this changed in recent years: T&I services are becoming a fashionable topic, new paradigms emerge and promises are made to scale such T&I services across all sectors and regions. This asks for new governance structures and muscles are shown, but the roles for big tech, governments, and other players are still up for debate or fight.

But what should be our vision for our "Garden V2.0" under such new conditions? Which options do we have? Which one(s) to pick? Let's take the challenge!

Imagine

Starting on uncharted territory, we build a garden, it grows nicely, it serves us well, we care for it

Neighbours

No one cares, they are not interested in it, they prefer cars, buildings, but not gardens

Perfection

We continue to cater for the garden, we set up paths to better serve us, we agree on rules to protect the garden, we organise community work to improve the garden

Wind of Change

The neighbours start to get interested in gardening, gardening rules are getting established, plans for new gardens are presented everywhere, gardening experts create gardening concepts, it's becoming a fashionable topic, PoCs are created to get a feeling of what a garden could look like, but no one outside of our community notices our already existing garden

Our options

  • build walls around our garden protecting it
  • make the garden even bigger and nicer since the community catering for it is growing, invite others to make this happen
  • we become experts in gardening and gardening governance, let's show off and sell our expertise
  • the plans for other gardens look promising, nicer and shinier, let's go there and leave our garden
  • gardening is getting to much regulated, this is boring, let's do something else
  • ...

Call for action

  • lets figure out how we want to find our positioning as a community, let's make an informed decision on how we want to go about. Let's shape our "Gardening V2.0"

Implementation Guideline:

  • only pictures, enriched with well-known logos or terms from our T&I environment, examples: eduGAIN, REFEDS, MyAcademicID, NREN service logos, eIDAS, EBSI, etc....
  • No labels
